Here is a coffee table style photo book that I quite appreciate called
Alter-Ego: Avatars and their creators by Robbie Cooper. It's seventy or so pages of real world people juxtaposed with their an image of their virtual selves. It has a nice range, from people living out fantasies, to others creating a similar self to people creating a persona for a specific agenda. The author also exhibits a wide selection of virtual worlds that the avatars inhabit including World of Warcraft, There.com, Star Wars Galaxies, Second Life and others. The photo pairings have toured in several cities so I have to assume its getting some attention. Its a pretty simple concept, but I'm glad someone has started this kind of virtual ethnography.
