Sophie Gateau

Hi Everyone. I'd like to post a link to this video, Sophie Gateau:Boa on the Lumen Eclipse site(Lumen Eclipse is a public art project displayed in Harvard Square, Cambridge MA).

The piece was produced a few years back, in 2004. Its a beautiful work that plays on the notion of animation and the hidden foundation of the cube. Here the cube becomes a physical (almost child-like) block that has video mapped on the faces. The video has imagery of average people which - while the blocks get moved around - can be configured in a seemingly infinite amount and variety of ways.

Whether its in Maya, I'm not absolutely sure. But there is definitely a creatively executed animated component to this film.

kiwi

This is my favorite 3D animation movie. It was made in Maya as the masters thesis of a student at The School of Visual Arts getting an MFA Computer Art, in New York City. Many of you may have already seen it. It's a good benchmark to strive for. It's also a nice simple yet complex story that people can identify with. enjoy!

Creative Cow Maya Forums

This is a pretty popular digital media community that I have been lurking through for the past few years for thier great tutorials. They cover a lot of programs, Maya included. They have a tutorial section, but another great resource is the forums which are easily searchable.

The forums sections always have an answer to my question when working with After Effects or Final Cut and it is a pretty active community so if you have a question that you cant find an answer to - chances are the someone in the forums will be able to help you out.

super good times

Mental Ray Shaders

Hi all,

http://www.pixero.com/downloads_mr.html

This is the website where you can download many good mental ray shaders to use inside Maya. The shader that I used to mix the fast_skin shader with some specular blinn shaders is called mix20layer. You can see a good example of how to use it in the Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/) skin tutorial. It is very flexible because you can mix up to 20 shaders in different layers and specify how you want them to be blended...

Have a happy holidays!

360 skies

Attached to the title is a link to a bunch of great 360 skies and the tutorial on how to apply it properly. I applied a few to the half circle and they worked well. You will have to do some photoshop editing to the jpgs to remove the tag.

Environment Modeling

Ok.. now the reason for this post is because i figured since we are all doing an environment for our final exam then this would be a great example to see how this person did it with animation.. the animation wont come in until next semester better its never too late to get a head start.

Lens Overview

I found this while trying to get a set value for focal lengths. It is based off a real camera lens but still applies. It also gives a formula that will help you choose the proper focal length for your scene.

Realistic Snow

Here is a nice tutorial for creating realistic snow. It isn't the best outcome if you follow the tutorial step by step. But is you tweak it a little and use some of your own lighting you can get it to look quite real. I attached the link to the tutorial by clicking on the title and the link to their scene file by clicking on the picture.
