Great Simple Little Animation

Hey everyone,
This is a little animation that has been floating around and is on youtube.
I think this movie is really simple and touching.
The scenery doesn't look very complex but I think its an interesting exercise in story and character.

Toon Button (Cont'd)

Hey everyone, I want to show another example of a game that has made good use of the toon button feature.

The image you see on the left is from DragonQuest VIII. A very popular game that came out for the Playstation 2 console last year. Oddly enough, the characters on this game were created by the same artists that made the characters in the previous game I posted on this blog.

The one major difference between the two modeling types, is the thickness of the line that outlines the characters he created. The toon button on Maya allows you to control the thickness of the black line border. This is a great tool for making models that come from previous drawings that deal with the Anime or Manga styles. Texture can go along way at making a low poly figure look real complex even with the use of the toon button.

If you want to check out more screenshots of the game, check out the galleries here: http://media.ps2.gamespy.com/media/496/496303/img_2214371.html

ZBrush

Hi,

ZBrush is a really powerful modeling tool that has become very widespread in the film making and videogame industries. It allows you to model in 3d like a "traditional sculptor" and is very interesting when trying to create organic models.

Here you can find its history en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZBrush
The company who created it is www.pixologic.com

And, here is a little basic tutorial

3DLinks.com

This is an interesting site I've been looking at for a while that I think all of you should be interested in. It serves as a place for artists to register so they can submit pieces to the site gallery, post tutorials, and similar things. Its been around for a while so it has become a pretty solid resource for inspiration, tutorials, and for getting an idea of what other amateur artists are producing. Enjoy!

Maya Toon Button potential

Hey its Roddy from Maya1

I've been playing around with Maya and figured out how to use the Toon button to make my models look similar to the characters in the Dragonball Z Budokai games. I'm not saying they look all perfectly professional and whantot when I try it, but with good practice one can figure it out a little.
If anybody out there is looking to make any kind of "cartoony" models on Maya, you may benefit from this tool. Here's a look at the end results if done correctly. (Image above)
If you want to see more, check out the screenshots at this site: http://media.wii.ign.com/media/824/824078/imgs_4.html
I know the Anime style may not be everybody's cup of tea, but they are a great way to make a low poly figure that looks interesting. Be sure to check out this game for the Wii console. I recently purchased it and really liked the interactivity of it all. Games of the same title in the past have really let a lot of people down because they have been formulaic and get boring really quickly, but Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 has a lot of neat features that will keep your interest for a while. People can do thigns like customize their characters, play a storymode, tournaments, ect.
In the end I found the style of the game really interesting and hopefully I can try to do something similar for my final. Try out the toon feature even if you dont think you'll end up using it anytime soon. Who know? It could come in handy someday!

Polyman

This is something I noticed while doing the polyman tutorial for the homework:

The tutorial is done using an older version of maya and some of the menu names are different. The big ones that I noticed so far have to do with modeling. In the top left of the maya screen, under "File", there is a drop down box that controls your menu sets. In the tutorial, when doing a boolean operation, you will be instructed to make sure you have the modeling menu set selected. In Maya 8.5, there is no modeling menu set. To do the polygon boolean operation, you need to select the "Polygons" menu set and look under the "Mesh" menu. Also, if he asks you to go to the "Edit Polygons" menu, you need to go to "Edit Mesh" instead.

As a final FYI, the menus and shortcuts for working with NURBS are in the Surfaces menu set and the Surfaces shortcut tab.

Fantasy Female Tutorial

Over the summer I needed a tutorial to help me create a female body so that I could create some dresses for my history of fashion class. I found on Simply3Dworld.com a really outstanding tutorial and I went ahead and dropped the $85 to buy it. I decided to make it available to everyone in the class so I put it in the student added tutorials folder, in a folder called FantasyFemale-from-Simply3DWorld. The tutorial is pretty advanced and REALLY long, but it doesn't assume any knowledge of maya. The guy who walks you through it is very careful about explaining things and whenever he uses a new tool he points out where he got it from. The tutorial goes from absolutely nothing to a fully modeled AND textured hi-res character. It has 25 parts, each one is an AVI, and most of them are about 25-30 minutes long. I haven't gone through the whole thing myself yet, but I hope to have it finished in a couple weeks. If you want to go through this whole thing yourself, expect to put in alot of hours. Using this tutorial will teach you about modeling with NURBS, Polys, and SubDs, and the differences between them. It will also go through UV mapping and building UV textures in photoshop. Anyway, I'll shut up about it now. If you're looking a challenge that will really push your skills to a new level, check this tutorial out. -Dave Mathews
